Sammy Aoki

DVM, Ph.D., President of the Japanese Society of Equine Science and one of the board directors of the Japan Farriers Association (JFA).
After graduating from Azabu University, he earned his doctorate from Azabu University Graduate School, where he analysed the changing horse leg movement on deferent hoof angles using video. In 1974, he joined the Japan Farriery Association as an instructor in their farrier’s education program. For 45 years, he has promoted biomechanical research of horse locomotion, and has used his findings to theorise the principles of sport horseshoeing and therapeutic shoeing to educate active farriers and farriery students. During this time, he served as Secretary-General of the National Organising Committee for ICEEP 5 in Japan in 1998. In 2004, he was inducted into the International Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame at the Derby Museum of Churchill Downs racetrack in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, for his efforts in promoting technical exchange with advanced European and American countries in the farriery industry, and for his efforts in the international standardisation of the farriery industry. His works include translation of advanced foreign books on horseshoeing and equine locomotion, as well as editorial supervising of Guidebook of Racehorses and the New Textbook of Farriery.
