Fugitives Drift and Islandwana

This tour starts and ends in Durban Kwa-Zulu Natal and will take place with a minimum of six delegates.  This can be done either before or after the conference.

iceep 8 iceep 8 iceep 8

Day 1

Transfer from Durban via the Valley of a thousand hills to the Battlefields of Rorkes Drift and Islandwana made famous by the world renown historian David Rattray.

Fugitives Drift Lodge is situated on the site of the original Rattray homestead, comprising of spacious luxury en-suite cottages all overlooking the plains flanking the Buffalo river gorge. Enjoy superb cuisine, a unique fusion of home and modern flavours, in the splendid atmosphere of a veritable museum of Zulu war memorabilia.

Fugitives drift lodge, full board.

Day 2

After breakfast into the Land Rovers you go to explore the battlefield of Islandwana. How the mighty Zulu nation managed to take on the British empire and defeat them is a story waiting to be told. The background is narrated to you as you travel the half an hour to Islandwana by David Rattray. His spirit certainly does live on. The historians at fugitives are outstanding and they certainly bring the story to life. There is never a dry eye when the tale is told. An emotional morning.

Return to Fugitives for a late lunch - time to soak up the beauty of these well established gardens or relax alongside their sparkling pool. There is certainly the opportunity to go riding, lots of small plains game on the reserve, take a long walk, or, for the adventurous, canoeing.

Fugitives drift lodge, full board
Day 3

A day to relax and enjoy. The two battles are brought alive in the telling and it is really emotionally draining to handle both on one day. For this reason today is yours to enjoy. Perhaps a visit to the nearby Zulu village to experience their day to day living first hand. After a long lunch you set off yet again to the nearby Rorkes Drift where, a handful of British soldiers, together with their wounded, held back the force of the Zulu army crazy with their victory. More Victoria crosses were handed out here than ever recorded.

Back to Fugitives for dinner and overnight.

Day 4

For those wishing to return home a transfer back to Durban. For those wishing to visit the historic stud farm of Summerhill through to Hartford country house we go. Hartford is steeped in history and goes back a good 130 years when the beauty of this area was discovered by the Moore family Hartford country house is now world renown for it’s comfort and it’s fine cuisine. A real gem in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Hartford house dinner, bed and breakfast.

Day 5

The farm, Summerhill, started off  as a milking parlour which became the foundation of modern Africa’s biggest dairy business – national combined dairies. Today the original dairy is preserved in the Hartford chapel. The Summerhill stallion is a showcase for some of the finest thoroughbreds in the southern hemisphere. Most of them are the property of the Maktoums, the first family of Dubai, who rank among the world’s most successful owners of the modern era. The farm’s labour force is predominantly Zulu. History remembers them as revered warriors (you will have experienced this at Fugitives Drift) and excellent stock farmers.

Inyati game lodge – Sabie Sands Kruger national park.

This side trip can be done before or after the conference.

iceep 8 iceep 8

Day 1

You will be met at Kruger international airport and driven the one and a half hours to the private section of the Kruger National Park, the Sabie Sands. Here accommodation has been confirmed at the beautiful Inyati Game Lodge. This is not an exclusive lodge but in my humble opinion it certainly boasts the most beautiful setting and the game viewing is handled in exactly the same areas as the world famous Ulusaba, Exeter and Leopard Hills  -  all of these camps come at great cost.

Day 2

A day at Inyati goes something like this. Early morning wake up, meet on the verandah for tea and coffee and then off you go in your 4 x 4 to see what the bush has to offer. Return to camp for a leisurely brunch at about 1000. For those energetic soles, your ranger and tracker will be only too happy to take you off for a bush walk - it certainly gets the adrenalin flowing if one meets a lion face to face. Inyati boasts a beautiful pool and it is lovely to just relax with a good book and watch the game pass by.

At 3h00p.m. you meet again on the verandah for a substantial high tea before heading off again with your ranger and tracker. There is something very special indeed to watch the sun set in the middle of the African bush with gin and tonic in hand. You continue game viewing by the aide of a spotlight and I do hope you get the opportunity of watch the lions and leopards as they hunt.

Return to camp to enjoy dinner under a canopy of stars.

Day 3

Enjoy your time at Inyati.

Day 4

Back to Kruger Mpumalanga airport today in time to connect with your flights.

Victoria Falls

This can certainly be done at the beginning or the end of the conference or as an add-on with any of the other tours.

Day 1

Depart Johannesburg for Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side. Zimbabwe, contrary to what you read in the newspapers, has a little enclave that has not been touched by Mugabe, Victoria Falls. We personally feel it is criminal to not see the falls from the Zimbabwe side and, with the little gem of a hotel called the Stanley and Livingstone, and the best operators in Zimbabwe, Victoria falls anytime, this is certainly possible.

Met by Vic falls anytime and taken through to the Stanley and Livingstone.

Stanley and Livingstone dinner, bed and breakfast.

Day 2

You will be picked up at the hotel this morning by Vic falls anytime and taken off to experience “the smoke that thunders”, the Victoria falls. The elephant walk shopping area and the market are both wonderful to explore and your “new best friends from Vic falls anytime” will be on hand to assist with the bartering. No visit to the falls is complete without stopping by at the grand old lady, the Victoria falls hotel and lunch will be enjoyed on the verandah.

Return to the Stanley and Livingstone for dinner and overnight.

Day 3

There is so much to do at the falls. There is a lion breeding programme on the doorstep of the Stanley and Livingstone which is exceptional and it is really a wonderful experience to walk with the king of the jungle. To do a trunk in hand programme and go off game viewing on the back of an elephant is something one never forgets. The bungi jump off Victoria falls bridge, the helicopter flight over the falls, or, for the not faint hearted, the white water rafting. A day at leisure to enable you to make your choice. Vic falls anytime will do all the bookings for you and you can just settle with them directly.

This afternoon you will end the day on the mighty Zambezi river for a sunset cruise.

Dinner this evening a choice of returning to the hotel or enjoying the Boma restaurant. Lots of dancing and lots of laughter.

Day 4

Back to the airport in time to connect with your flight to Johannesburg.

01 Nov

You will be met at Port Elizabeth airport by Acilia Schutte and driven the one hour to the Woodall country house bordering the world famous Addo Elephant Park. Acilia is one of the top guides in South Africa and is such fun to be with. This little haven is the most wonderful place to get over jet lag, and, boasting one of the finest kitchens and an outstanding wellness centre, makes it even more attractive.

Woodall country inn dinner bed and breakfast.

02 Nov

Early morning wake up and off you go in your 4 x 4 vehicle with an accomplished ranger into the heart of the Addo park to see what the bush has to offer. Return to Woodall late morning for a leisurely breakfast. After a long flight it is nice to just relax around a pool or take a long walk.

High tea is served on the verandah and off you go again for a sunset drive in Addo. Return to Woodall for dinner on the verandah.

03 Nov

Farewell to Woodall as you set off to explore the garden route under the excellent guidance of Acilia. A very full day awaits you.  First stop is the Storms River bridge, the highest bungi in the world at 220 metres,  definitely not for the faint hearted. From here a walk through the Tsitsikamma forest is a must before heading off for Monkeyland. No visit to this area is complete without stopping to enjoy the elephant orphanage and a perfect end to the day is the Tenikwa Cat Sanctuary for quality time with the cheetah’s and lions. The drive from here to your home for the next two nights, lairds lodge, is just fourty five minutes. A special chef’s dinner awaits you at the house this evening.

04 Nov

After being cooped up in the car for the full day yesterday I would strongly recommend that you enjoy a leisurely breakfast, have a bit of time at leisure, and then, set off to explore the little artists town of Knysna. It is charming and a Thursday is always a busy day. There is a wonderful little restaurant called Scirroco on Thesen island with great views of the lagoon and it is here that I would suggest you enjoy lunch. You are confirmed to set off at 3.00p.m. On springtide charters to enjoy the famous heads of Knysna as the sun sets over Africa. Dinner this evening at leisure. The waterfront area at Knysna is wonderful for a casual dinner

Lairds lodge, bed and breakfast.

05 Nov

Another long exciting day awaits you as you wave farewell to lairds and continue along the garden route passing the beautiful beaches of the wilderness and then into Mossel bay to visit the oldest post office in South Africa and, of course, the off shore oil rigs. A stop at the little town of Swellendam is always a winner for lunch and then continue to Agulhas country lodge at Agulhas where a warm welcome awaits you.

Agulhas country lodge dinner bed and breakfast.

06 Nov

It is not often that guests get to stand at the Southern most tip of Africa and I do hope you enjoy the stark beauty this area has to offer. You will be taken off on a three hour 4 x 4 adventure along the beach today, and, of course, the time of departure depends on the tides. Nice if you get the opportunity to lie in this morning, but, you will just have to wait and see.

It is a fun area to explore and no one better than Acilia to share it with you.

07 Nov

The drive today along the coast, stopping at Hermanus to enjoy the little shops, you will thoroughly enjoy. It is a beautiful drive along False Bay and an easy ride to Spier - the conference venue.
